*Calorimetry Lab – Please either print the PDF to write on or write responses on notebook paper. NO TYPED ANSWERS as this lab is largely math based. You will access and use the Calorimetry Gizmo to complete the lab, but we are NOT doing the Student Exploration Guide worksheet. I am offering the Assessment questions located below the Gizmo as EXTRA CREDIT.

No Tuesday Notes

WEDNESDAY NOTES:

  • Total Energy Changes WS due tonight. The most common issues I’ve seen thus far are:
    1. Overly rounding on intermediate parts of a mutli-part question: Keep extra SF for each part and wait until AFTER adding to round for final SF
    2. Mixing or using incorrect signs: Remember, anytime you are moving up the heating curve (left to right), the ΔT, ΔH, and q will ALL be positive but moving down the heating curve (right to left) will have all negative ΔT, ΔH, and values
    3. Not carefully keeping track of units: an answer is calculated and should have a unit of J, but the student write kJ and then incorrectly performs a conversion.
  • The Calorimetry Lab Data Table Row 2 says “temperature of the hot water bath.” In the Gizmo, this will be the temperature of the solid you have selected. See the Edsby group for a screen shot example.

THURSDAY NOTES:

  • Today’s deadlines are the Calorimetry EdPuzzle and Worksheet. Pay close attention to which masses and temperature changes you are using where.
  • If you did not see yesterday, the Calorimetry Lab Data Table Row 2 says “temperature of the hot water bath.” In the Gizmo, this will be the temperature of the solid you have selected. See the Edsby group for a screen shot example.

FRIDAY NOTES:

  • Calorimetry Lab is due tonight. Remember you are NOT doing the Student Exploration sheet within the Gizmo but a completely different lab sheet based on the real lab we would have done in class.

*How to access Gizmos: Go to Clever and open the Gizmos by Explore Learning app. Launch the Titration Gizmo shared with you in your Chem Hon class for which you have been automatically enrolled.

** DIRECTIONS for Titration Gizmo

I have taken extra time to format the Gizmo: Titration WS to make inputting answers easier. There is a text box in every location where an answer is needed. Additionally, all your typed answers should show up as red. For this reason, please do NOT print the Gizmo as I did not make text boxes large enough to provide room for longer answers. I have also included a .docx version (for use with Word) as well as a .rtf and .odt version (which may be more compatible with other word processors). Please try different file types to find that one that looks most like the image below in terms of formatting. Remember, all students have FREE access to Microsoft Word via o365.sdhc.k12.fl.us or look for the O365 app in Clever.

WEDNESDAY NOTES:

  • I had some Gizmo questions on Tuesday. Be sure to take a look at the Gizmo BEFORE my office hour tomorrow (1-2 PM) so you can come visit me if you have your own questions.
  • Also don’t forget to do the Gizmo exploration guide AND the assessment questions below the Gizmo. If you have only done one, I am putting a zero for the other to ensure you don’t forget to do BOTH!

THURSDAY NOTES:

  • Titration Gizmo due today. Be sure to do both parts (the exploration guide AND the assessment questions under the gizmo).
  • Lots of Gizmo questions! Come see me during my office hour (12-1).

FRIDAY NOTES:

  • Next week you will have EdPuzzle assignments for watching videos. These assignments will be graded based on watching the video (EdPuzzle tracks this) and correctly answering any embedded questions (the video stops and the questions come on the screen at specific times). If you’d like, you can create an account and join the class now. Visit edpuzzle.com/join/acoikos to join (the  join code is acoikos if you already have an account).

Chem Hon week of April 13

It seems most students are using Edsby for messaging as its functioning has improved. For this reason, I am turning off the ability to comment on PlantLectures posts.

Please note the change in deadlines!

  • Zoom ID: 265 940 8696
  • Password: taitl

TUESDAY NOTES:

  • Note the change in office hours Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • See me during office hours if you have a question on last week’s assignments or if you need assistance on this week’s assignments.
  • The pH video is 66 minutes. You should split this, but also give yourself time to attempt the pH Practice Table (a short practice) on Wednesday. Maybe 40-45 minutes Tue, the rest Wed?
  • Don’t forget that all uploaded work will be spot checked for accuracy. This means I randomly pick a few questions to grade on accuracy. This would constitute 50% of your grade max, the other 50% coming from full completion of the assignment.
  • The gradebook is getting unruly with all the uploads! If you think I have missed updating something from the last two weeks, please send me a direct Edsby message and I will look into it.

WEDNESDAY NOTES:

  • Today is your first non-Sunday deadline. Please upload images to Edsby no later than 11 PM, and you should probably do so well before 11 PM to avoid technical issues.
  • The pH Practice Table does NOT need to be submitted to Edsby, only the pH Math WS.

THURSDAY NOTES:

  • Again, you do not need to submit the pH Practice Table. You only need to submit the pH Math WS. However, you should complete the table and check your work against the video to ensure you are working correctly.

FRIDAY NOTES:

  • You still have two assignments left for the week: the pH Math WS and the Acid-Base Titration WS. Let’s try to have at least one of those uploaded before end of day Friday!
  • There is no “school” on Monday. However, I will still post my schedule for the week for those that would like to start early.

Chem Hon week of April 6

Please endeavor to stick to this schedule as much as possible. I expect to see regular progress throughout the week. The Sunday deadlines are to accommodate unforeseen complications. Mrs. Tait’s Message!

Gizmo in Clever

**Effective immediately: grading for this quarter will be done on a strictly point basis. This means grades are calculated by dividing total points earned by total possible points. There will be no weighting of specific types of assignments, though they may be assigned varying points possible.

Weekly Schedule

Once you log into Clever, this is what the Gizmos by Explore Learning icon will look like and should be under Links (District).

GizmoIcon

I do not have a student view from inside Gizmos, but you should already be enrolled in a chemistry course (much like LearnSmart) and by entering this course, you should see the Solubility and Temperature Gizmo I have shared with you. Click on the image (or where it says Launch) and following the directions on the Student Guide.

You may type directly into the Student Guide .docx file . If you do not have Word (or other Office products), please go to o365.sdhc.k12.fl.us to download your FREE version of all Office products.

For the two graphs, sketch them out on a separate piece of paper. If you cannot submit both at the same time, Edsby will let you submit multiple times with the resubmit button and I can still see all previous submissions. The .docx file and your sketch of the graphs will then be uploaded to Edsby. If you cannot submit both at the same time, Edsby will let you submit multiple times with the resubmit button and I can still see all previous submissions.

Please see me during an office hour if you are having difficulty with any aspect of accessing or completing the Gizmo.

The office hour today is from 11-12 PM. You only need attend if you have questions or issues to discuss. Zoom ID for all office hours: 265 940 8696

Solubility & Saturation today

Weekly Schedule

There is no upload for today’s worksheet but rather an Office 365 form you need to submit. The form does not contain the questions but rather the PDF of the worksheet. Pay attention that question numbers match up. Please utilize the office hour today if you are having difficulties or have questions. The supersaturated video is pretty cool!

The office hour today is from 12-1 PM. You only need attend if you have questions or issues to discuss. Zoom ID for all office hours: 265 940 8696

Procrastination vs. Circumstances

Please refer to Monday’s post for this week’s schedule.

While my deadlines all occur on Sunday, I STRONGLY encourage that you follow the schedule posted (i.e. you all should have uploaded your Mixed Practice WS answers on Monday). The Sunday deadlines are in place due to the highly unusual circumstances in which we currently find our nation. Thus, you should only be deviating from the posted schedule when circumstances dictate that you cannot keep to it rather than general procrastination (i.e. device availability, providing childcare, illness, etc.). Communication during this time will be of the utmost importance.

I have the ability to schedule posts on PlantLectures but not on Edsby. Thus, your PlantLectures post will go live daily at 12:30 AM but I may not post the link to Edsby until 8-9 AM. Right now your use of Edsby is restricted to uploads of assignments, checking grades, or direct messaging of personal questions (please use PlantLectures for more general ones like how to do something on an Office365 form or Clever). You can also use email for personal communication (Lindsay.Tait@sdhc.k12.fl.us). If that changes, I will let you know.

Office hours are from 2-3 PM today. You only need attend if you have questions or issues to discuss. Zoom ID for all office hours: 265 940 8696

Get me those pictures, testing out Zoom tomorrow

I am responding to each student once a photo has been uploaded to Edsby Make sure to get me yours by tonight or let me know what issues you might be having. Also, some of you submitted photos that were either not taken by you or were not taken yesterday. Please submit a recent, fresh picture!

Zoom: I will be testing out office hours at 9 AM and 1 PM for 30 minutes each on Thursday. You only need to check in during ONE of these sessions. You don’t need to stay long, only enough so that I know you are able to access Zoom and answer any questions you might have. You can download Zoom (either on a desktop, laptop, or cell phone) ahead of time and make sure your video and mic are working. No need to sign up, just try to join a meeting and enter the ID below.

The link for both sessions will be https://zoom.us/j/2659408696 or Meeting ID: 265 940 8696

Please be sure to check PlantLectures each day for information. As per the new normal, leave comments below or use the Edsby group.

Still setting up for success!

Assignment: Let’s try some stuff! Just in case you have never had to upload something to Edsby, I have created an “assignment” that requires you to upload a photograph (not a Word or PDF document). Later, we will need to upload pictures of math work (let’s be honest, typing out math problems is HARD). For this assignment, I’d like you to find something G-rated to take a picture of and upload it to me via the correct Edsby assignment. This picture could be of your pet, a flower, you getting exercise outside, your favorite meal, or even your amazing face! Just keep it G-rated please!! Laughs are appreciated. If you are having any issues or questions, please feel free to comment on this post or via the Edsby group (if you can get to it!). DUE BY THURSDAY NIGHT

Reminder: In addition, make sure you have completed the Colligative Properties WS that was given on Friday before break (or Wednesday for those of you that knew you would be absent). Remember links to PDFs of all the worksheets can be found on the Worksheets & Handouts page of this website and you may simply write your work on notebook paper if you would rather not print out the worksheet. If your completed worksheet is at school…I don’t have any further directions as the administration has not addressed that problem yet.

Announcement: If you would like me to check on using incentive cards, please send me a direct Edsby message or email with the color of you incentive card. Teachers are being provided directions for how to ensure students are only able to drop the appropriate number of tests.

It’s a new beginning

This week is intended primarily for teachers to prepare for online instruction and to get students acclimated to what online learning might look like.

1) We still have a fair amount of content left to cover. I have videos recorded from previous years but may be updating with some new ones. This will allow you to view videos at your convenience.

2) I am planning to have you submit assignments via Edsby. This might entail uploading a PDF, Word file, or an image of completed work. Please let me know if you anticipate this being a problem. I may set up a test assignment this week for you all to upload something (not graded) just to make sure we all can.

3) Given this unique time, I may also explore some other learning offerings online. Please communicate with me early about tech issues or be sure to test out things when asked before I commit to an assignment.

4) I am looking into options for office hours where I would be available real-time to answer questions and review content. Many teachers are using Zoom. Let me know in the comments if you have other ideas or preferences.

The commenting feature is turned on within PlantLectures now so that we can avoid heavy traffic at Edsby. Please feel free to respond to this post with any other questions you might have and I will do my best to answer them. I will try to monitor both PlantLectures and Edbsy for comment but DMs in Edsby or email are still best for personal communications. Hope you all are doing well!
